I have no clue how this escaped my attention, but Hunter S. Thompson has been writing articles for for years, and I had no idea. (I used the archive page, because espn's own archive is hatefully incomplete.) Thompson was/is, of course, an inveterate substance-(ab)user and gambling fiend, and so writing a column about sports is still mostly just a vehicle for those things, but even in short bursts it's as wild and freakish as anything else he's written. My favorites are Thompson's grudging defense of the Raiders legacy, and his description of yet another instance of the fear.
